What is a VPN?

First things first: The Internet

So you know what a VPN can do but what actually is a VPN? Well SpyOff VPN have done a detailed breakdown of what a VPN is here. Here is a smaller breakdown of what a VPN is:

The internet isn’t based around www.’s and names of websites. Websites have their own unique URL as does our internet connection. Google may be dislpayed as ‘www.google.com’ on your web browser, but behind that piece of text is a set of numbers. When you type google.com into your web browser, your browser looks for the IP address which is associated to google.com on a DNS server. It finds it and then presents that page to you.

VPN’s

A VPN is a “Virtual Private Network. This technology establishes an encrypted connection between different endpoints. From an internet enabled device to the internet. Depending on the protocol used, this is more or less secure. The information between the two connections is encrypted and no one access it from the outside. Hence the term ‘private’ network.

Your computer will encrypt the data before sending it. Your destination will decrypt the data, create a response to it and encrypt it all before sending it back. This is apparent for all webpages, be that a online game, a shop or a YouTube video. The use of a VPN is very secure because of this.

Google Pixel 3 XL revealed?

Google Pixel 3 XL has seemingly been revealed! As it was left in the back of a Lyft!

Metro are reporting that the driver of the Lyft is a reader of Android Police. A technology website. He is a user of the Pixel 2 XL and immediately noticed that it was different than it!

The thing that was most noticeable to him was the notch. It is completely different! As he had seen it on a number of previous Pixel 3 XL leaks prior. Plus the conspicuous Google Logo on the back of the device would lead him to believe it was a Google Pixel 3 XL.

The driver chose not to have a look within the phone. Yet decided to take pictures of the unknown device instead. Consequently sending them to Android Police. Metro are too reporting that the device was returned to it’s rightful owner.

Maybe we will know more come October 4th at Google’s Pixel event.

However, Metro are reporting that the device will have a 2,960 x 1,440 pixel resolution and run Android 9.

One Legendary Speaker

British speaker innovators Bowers and Wilkins are bringing to the Festival of Sound (27th-30th September) their incredible Bowers and Wilkins Sound System! It will be shown off at the Novotel London West, Hammersmith International Center. The three day event will showcase luxury audio, live music and seminars. The Bowers and Wilkins Sound System gives musical artists the opportunity to perform on a speaker system that will bring a different dimension to their music.

At the festival this year, artists such as Chris Difford the founding member of Squeeze and two time Grammy nominated singer songwriter Beht Nielsen Chapman. Plus trip hop artists UNKLE and co-founderss of Art of Noise, Gary Langan and JJ Jeczalik.

The Sound System is the make up of over 50 years of acoustic excellence to produce one incredible sound system. Providing a range and clarity that a normal top end hi fi speaker system would. Providing a total of 120dB of sound and bass that is thumping but controlled. The sound engineeres that have crafted most of Bowers and Wilkins most famous products also worked on the Sound System. The result, one amazing PA system that sounds beautifully wonderful.

We loved Boosted Boards here at How To Kill An Hour, if you remembered our review of  the original city slicker. If you didn’t here’s our run down of what we loved about that amazing board. We even did a little test to see how far it can go on one full charge. However, that board has now been superseded by a new line up of urban travelling personal vehicles. In today’s review, we’re taking the grand daddy of them all, the top of the line, the king of the ring, the Boosted Stealth!

It’s really fast and even though a 2mph increase in speed doesn’t feel like a lot. Especially for those that drive 2mph is nothing.

However, when it is just you and the board and the open road. Boy oh boy, 2mph is HUGE! The top speed is only eligible for those that use the ‘hyper’ speed mode on the board. We advise riders to get used to all the other modes first before they go IN! As electric skateboards do take some getting used to. It’s not a case of getting on and pushing go! You need to practice!

The DJI Lacie Co-Pilot is basically a rugged external hard drive. But for the videographer’s out there. It’s a lot more than that. Who doesn’t want 2TB’s, a back up battery and a SD card reader in one?

Not got USB C? The Co-Pilot has got you! Use the regular USB or MicroUSB ports. Plug in any piece of media and the Co-Pilot does the rest, it’s automatically backed up. There’s also a small screen on the front to tell you how much storage is left. Making it great for videographers who don’t want to carry around their laptop ‘just in case’ they run out of space on all their SD cards.  The Co-Pilot will also charge devices and daisy chain other drives off of it. Simply plug another external HDD into it and your lappy will be able to read and write to it!

We loved using it when we were using the Boosted Board and it definitely helps when we are on the road. As it helps us not having to carry around as much equipment with us. The ability to attach it to our mobile devices allows us to check rushes without the need for laptops, which is a saviour as we don’t have to be taking footage off the device, on to the computer and checking. All very time consuming!

Deepfake Dancing

Deepfake Dancing – Drop A Beat!

A few months ago there was the scandal revolving around Deepfakes. The tech that is a more intelligent version of faceswapping, was used to insert celebs into naughty videos. The latest way that this artificial intelligence tech is being used? Dancing. Deepfakes dancing is here and you can be the best dance in your town! (In video form at least) It uses AI to read someone elses dance moves and then copies them on to your body.

The tech is developeed by 4 researchers at UC Berkley. They wrote in a paper posted on arXiV that their system is made up of a number of steps. Firstly a video of the want to be dancer is recorded, a separate programme then analyses the moves and compiles them into a stick figure. The want to be dancer is recorded for around 20mins for the quality of transfer to be useable. Then a source video is found and a stick figure made of their movements too!  Then the swap happens. The stick figure (non dancing one) is attached to the movements of the dancing stick figure. Boom. You are now a dancer. A capabale one too.

Limitations

The programme is working very hard to smooth the movement of the stick figures. The reason behind this is so that upon completion the dancers don’t jerk around too much. Plus there programme is also retracing the non professional dancers face to ensure realism.

However, for the Deepfake Dancing programme to work effectively, loose clothing cannot be worn, they have to wear tight fighting clothing. As The Verge are reporting, in the video above, there is some visual artefacts. Joints of the target and source dancer don’t 100% match up. The software seems to not be able to keep up with small complex movements either for example a hand flipping from back to front.

Despite all this Deepfake Dancing sounds super cool. But like most tech it could be used in a negative way! It will be interesting to see how this tech plays out and how it will be used by all in the future!

Amazon Go

Amazon Go launching another store!

In what seems like a move to eradicate all jobs for customer advisors everywhere. Amazon are launching another Amazon go store. After the succesful launch of it’s first cashier-less store in Seattle in December 2016.

It’s second store will too open in Seattle and launched earlier this month. It’s part of the gradual roll out across America with other Amazon Go stores looking to open in LA, San Francisco and Chicago.

Amazon’s second store will be a smaller venue. It won’t feature a working kitchen like it’s main store. Neither will it include a liquor section. The smaller store is more aimed toward the office workers. Therefore will focusing on offering it’s customers baked goods and ready to go meals. Plus it’s own Blue-Apron-Like meal deals. It’s open from 7AM-7PM Monday – Friday and is situated on 5th and Marion in downtown Seattle.

Amazon Go: A Re-Cap.

Amazon Go is the world’s first cashier-less ‘regular’ store. It allows customers to enter the store by scanning a code on their app on a smartphone. You are then tracked by Amazon within the store by a ton of cameras above you. Amazon will then bill you when you take items off the shelves directly to the account which you used to enter the store. Therefore nulling the need fo a cashier. Verge are reporting that the cameras within the store are so smart they can even distinguish between three Amazon employees who dressed in Pikachu costumes to simulate robberies.

Would you use this if it was brought to the UK? What worries do you have or do you just see this as a way as us moving forward with technology? We shall see what the future holds for the jobs of many many people. However, some could argue that it’ll create more jobs?
