Barnsley Batteries!

We’re getting closer and closer to cleaner and more greener sources of energy and the UK is helping to achieve that goal. 40 homes in Oxspring, near Barnsley are taking part in a trial which will see their homes fitted with batteries to run on using energy solely generated by local rooftop solar panels.

Battery company Moixa are local solar specialist Energise Barnsley are behind the trial and they hope to create a “Virtual Power Plant” Essentially by linking all the homes together to generate electricity it will help to cope with the demand.

They will a method called bottlenecking in the power grid to stop the solar panel systems from feeding energy back into the network when they generate more energy than the homes need. By using a battery to store the power, it saves it up and spreading it wide between the community uses the energy it creates cleanly in a clean manner instead of dumping it back into the network.

 Moxia boss Simon Daniel said:

“By managing clusters of home batteries in a virtual power plant and allowing homeowners to use more of their solar energy, thereby exporting less, we believe we can significantly reduce peak generation output onto the network. This will allow more homes to go solar without imposing new costs on network operators.”

Google Maps Parking!

Google Maps already tells you how much traffic and congested your drive will be and it may soon tell you when you actually manage to arrive to your destination if there will be some parking spaces and the best place to park!

According to Android Police a new feature detailing just that was found in the 9.44 beta of Google Maps latest update. Spaces are listed as “easy,” “medium” and “limited”

Google owned app Waze introduced a similar feature of its own last year and while Waze can actually help you find a spot, Google’s own app only gives a general overview of the parking situation and it’s not yet clear as to how Google is getting this information.

How this is going to work? Is it limited to public places? Can it tell you if the road you live in is good for parking? No one knows for sure just yet. We’ll have to wait until the official release to find out but this is certainly interesting!

Ambulances Interrupting Tunes!

There’s a huge reason not to play music REALLY loud while in your car. That’s not because other people don’t want to hear your music but rather more that you won’t hear the emergency vehicle coming full speed behind you until the last moment.

Well in Sweden you won’t have to worry about that possibility no more. Sweden are testing Ambulances in Stockholm with a system that interrupts in-car audio via the FM transmitter on your car with a voice warning when they’re close by and responding to a crisis. What’s more interesting is that the system is speed sensitive so you’ll recieve notices from greater distances when you’re on the motorway.

Cassette sales increase!

Seem’s as though we all want to live in the past! As we have already said, Vinyl album sales have increased in 2016 but it seems as though another dark ages media has risen from the dead.

Cassette tapes sales grew with an incredible 129,000 copies sold! A 74% increase from 2015 sales. Most of the sales were online with the rest going to small independent retailers.

A few reasons may be because of this, due to Justin Beiber, The Weeknd selling their albums on Cassette tapes and Eminem re-issued The Slim Shady LP cassette selling 3,000 copies. The Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack was the most popular, having sold about 4,000 copies each in 2016 and 2015.

TV Pirates Beware!

If you’re a pirate you’re about to get caught! ISP’s in Britain including Virgin Media, TalkTalk, Sky and BT are going to be sending letters to the homes of people who pirate things like Tv Shows.

Letters are expected to be posted this week, starting 17th Jan.

Torrent users are expected to be targeted first rather than people who use streaming video services.

All the letter entails is where to get content legally, its part of the Government’s “Get it Right Campaign” and the letter starts off with “Get it Right from a Genuine Site” they got in touch with Metro:

‘Get it Right is a government-backed campaign acting for copyright owners who think their content’s been shared without their permission.

‘It looks like someone has been using your broadband to share copyrighted material (that means things like music, films, sport or books).

‘And as your broadband provider, we have to let you know when this happens.’

However what isn’t known is what happens if people ignore these letters!

What do you think will happen?

Apple wages war on Netflix streaming service

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple Music service are planning to add original video content to their service to help gain more subscribers.

This has been rumoured for a long time. It seems that Apple is now starting to reach out to Hollywood producers and are planning to add original content by the end of this year.

Apple are apparently trying to create some hard hitting original content like Westworld and Stranger Things.  There will be original movies potentially appearing later on down the line if the Tv Shows are a success.

There’s no news as to what type of shows that the big fruit seem to be planning due to how tight lipped they are with things usually.  This is kind of a surprise but kind of isn’t. Apple recently released a documentary. It was called 808: The Movie and narrated by Zane Lowe. So there were some signs! Apple acquired the rights to broadcast their own 30 minute series of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke. Also the company are planning a semi-autobiographical documentary series. One called ‘Vital Signs’ starring Dr Dre which is due out on Apple Music this year.

So this new venture see’s Apple’s first step outside of music related video content. How will they do?

Digital Video outsells Physical Video!

The inevitable happened and in 2016 streaming and downloadable video outsold DVD’s and Blu Rays for the first time in 2016.

Based on data from The Official Charts Company DVD and Blu Ray sales dropped by 17% year on year, (£1Billion – £894Million) Digital sales grew from £250M to £1.3billion according to estimates from market research firm IHS!!

Places like Netflix and Amazon churning out insanely good original content it’s no surprise that digital sales grew by so much and with them continuing to put more money into original content the sales will only continue to grow. Not only that places like Sky Store and Wuaki.tv also means you don’t even have to wait for the latest releases to hit Netflix you can rent them upon day of release!
