Audi e-Tron

We love our cars here at How To Kill An Hour and cars are getting more and more technological. If not for the tech inside the car, such as sound systems and air con, but the actual car itself. Electric cars are becoming more and more popular and there’s more choice on the market too. So we decided to check out Audi’s first fully electric production vehicle. The Audi e-Tron.

Turning Audi’s well-known e-tron technology into a series. The car has tons of personal space, a fantastic and a powerful driving experience all thrown into an SUV. An all electric SUV at that. This thing is a beast and can handle anything you throw at it, it will handle city driving with ease and will handle countryside driving with a breeze. It’s the ultimate everyday use car.

Power consumption, combined*: 26.4–21.8 kWh/100km (NEDC); 23.6–21.0 kWh/100km (WLTP)CO₂ emissions, combined*: 0 g/km

Audi’s Electric Drive.

The e-tron is powered by two electric motors. Allowing the SUV, bearing in mind this thing is a beast. To go from 0-100km/h stupidly quick. During our tests Marcus estimates it’s around 5-6 seconds. So that’s comparable to a sports car. The Audi e-Tron is also all-wheel drive, allowing you to have optimal traction and handling in any driving condition. So, that’s right, you guessed it. Off roading!

The quattro drive can be switched on when required and the results are that which are specific to the situation that you are in. You’ll get situation specific torque distribution, flexible control of the axle movements!

Charing Solutions

Audi are great as they offer you various different ways to charge at home.

You can either use the standard mobile charging system, which allows you to use a household 23oV household outlet or a 400 volt three phase outlet.

Or you can use an optional “Connect” charging system. This doubles the charging power to as much as 22kW. Combined with a home energy management system this will offer some intelligent functions. As charging when electric is less expensive, or with solar electricity. If you have it of course. This will need a photovaltaic system if you choose this route of charging.

You can control all charging processes as well as pre-heating and pre-cooling via the myAudi app!

If you are just using the car for everyday driving, you won’t need to stop at charging stations. While if you are on a long trip you are able to use fast charging stations, which will use DC (direct current) at up to 150kW. This is a first for series production vehicles. This will allow the Audi e-Tron to get set for the next stretch of a long distance drive, all within half an hour!

It can also be charged using AC (Alternating Current) though this will take longer, recharging at 22kW is also available as an option.

Audi e-Tron design.

The car looks amazing, there;s no doubt about that. Not only does it look great the insides are just as good.

The Audi Virtual cockpit is amazing, it has a sleek display and it stands virtually free in space and can display the optional virtual exterior mirrors. The navigation system will also intelligently give you suggestions based on previous routes!

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

Toyota have released a brand new hybrid car, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid! Way back in 1994, Toyota launched the original RAV4. This brought with it a new kind of car that could go anywhere and it had the rugged stance of an SUV. While it had the compact look of a hatchback. It made it’s own lane.

This spirit is also witnessed in this brand new version of the RAV4,  the fifth generation of the RAV4. It brings with it a brand new era of performance, capability and safety. Furthermore the advances are underpinned by the first use of Toyota’s new GA-K platform in an SUV.

The RAV4 has a low centre of gravity and an increased body rigidity. The new RAV4’s platform has superior handling, ride comfort and spacious interior. It also has an eye catching design with a lower roof/bonnet lines with higher ground clearance. While the cabin has more space and comfort with a fantastic finish throughout.

Power

RAV4 offers a self charging and hybrid powertrain, the new 2.5-litre petrol hybrid Dynamic Force engine, offering 215bhp in front-wheel drive form and 219bhp with all-wheel drive. Which in turn brings with it a responsiveness and efficiency with best in class fuel economy and emission levels.

Furthermore the all wheel drive system allows the SUV to “drive on any road”. The hybrid electric AWD-i system has been re- engineered and enhanced to provide much stronger performance in challenging conditions. It also allows for secure handling on slippery surfaces.

Additionally the RAV4 is the first Toyota model to benefit from the Toyota Safety Sense that extend the use of advanced technologies to help prevent accidents. Providing greater driver assistance and a degree of automated driving functionality.

TOYOTA NEW GLOBAL ARCHITECTURE GA-K PLATFORM

The foundation of the new RAV4’s dynamic qualities is the all-new TNGA GA-K platform.

This allows the car to have the strength of a low centre of gravity, lightweight and a strong, rigid and balanced chassis that delivers exceptional handling, stability and driver rewards.

This gives a really fun drive and enables a great design, both inside and outside of the car. Furthermore it brings with it an enhanced safety performance and comfort for everyone.

Every component has been made lighter and located lower down in the vehicle. Even the engine and the seats. Brining with it an incredibly low center of gravity. The platform brings with it a 57% increase in the body rigidity. This allows for a stable flat ride with incredible handling.

The GA-K platform defines the “confident and natural” driving quality that Toyota has sought for this new model. A confident driving feeling is due to the car not reacting adversely to disturbances and communicating a sense of stability. Natural driving feelins is due to the car reacting naturally to what the driver is doing.

CONCEPT AND DESIGN

The TNGA GA-K platform was beneficial to the designers of the new RAV4, as they wanted to give the SUV a strong character and style which helped to set it apart from other models in the SUV market.

Many standardised parts that have been implemented “under the skin” has helped to simplify the development process. This helped to give designers more time to create the look both inside and out.

The impactful look of the new RAV4 is helped by raising the ground clearance and using large diameter wheels (up to 18inch) which helps to make the car suitable whatever the use.

Inside the car is characterised by high sensory quality such as soft touch surfaces on the dashboard and door panels. Switchgear is new, with cleanly integrated buttons and pleasingly tactile controls. For example the button/dial to adjust the air conditioning.

POWERTRAINS AND PERFORMANCE

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is a brand new 2.5L Hybrid Dynamic force engine. It combines fuel and emissions efficiency with a quiet operation and more power and greater responsiveness.

The full system maximum output of 219bhp/163 kW in the all-wheel drive model (215bhp/160 kW with front-wheel drive) compares to 195bhp/145kW for the fourth generation model. The SUV can also accelerate from rest to 62mph takes just 8.1 seconds (FWD model).

The self charging hybrid system used in the RAV4 is the 4th generation of the tech and will deliver multiple benefits. The power control unit and the nickel-metal hydride battery are now more compact and lighter in weight. The transaxle and transmission have also been engineered to reduce electrical and mechanical losses. The battery in the RAV4 is also 11% lighter and transmission losses are reduced by 25%.

The new 4th generation system also makes great use of the new 2.5l Hybrid Dynamic Force engine, allowing for fuel consumption and emissions that is best in class.

Performance has been improved with better acceleration from stationary, improved efficiency at higher speeds, overall smoother and more linear acceleration and better control when decelerating.

INTELLIGENT ALL-WHEEL DRIVE (AWD-i)

Toyota is also improving it’s AWD-i (Intelligent all wheel drive technology) to deliver enhanced performance, capabilities and control in all driving conditions.  Allowing to set itself apart as it has impressive on and off road performance. As it has fantastic and secure cornering performance and grip in all conditions.

RAV4 Hybrid with significantly enhanced electric AWD-i system

The AWD-i system will help give better fuel economy in urban driving, quieter performance at high speeds and better traction in slippery conditions. The system, compared to mechanical AWD systems is more compact and lighter, which gives a better fuel consumption.

The electric AWD-i system automatically optimises the torque ratio depending on the driving conditions. This will provide improved handling, stability and off-road performance, particularly in faithful line tracing through bends in slippery conditions, giving the driver a strong, confidence-inspiring feeling of all four wheels being in good contact with the road.

AWD Integrated Management

Furthermore the Toyota RAV4’s all wheel drive performance is further improved due to the AWD Integrated Management (AIM). This system will automatically adjusts different vehicle systems. The steering assist, brake and throttle control, shift pattern and drive torque distribution – according to the drive mode selected.

The driver can switch from Normal to Eco or Sport mode. When choosing Sport mode, AIM modifies the steering assist, throttle control shift schedule and drive torque distribution to gain better on-road performance.

Greater “escape” capability with Trail Mode

This new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is so capable in many different conditions because of the new automatic limited slip differential control, Trail Mode.

Trail Mode helps to ensure best possible grip and control on low grip surfaces. The system will also provide valuable assistance when in challenging off road conditions.

The new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid will, once the Trail Mode has been activated via a button on the centre console. The free rotating wheel (if a wheel has lost contact with the ground on uneven terrain) can be braked and drive torque directed to the grounded wheel. The Throttle control and the transmission shift pattern will be adapted to help the driver keep the vehicle moving.

EQUIPMENT AND NEW TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE SYSTEMS

Equipment specifications for the new RAV4 demonstrate how Toyota continues to apply technologies to deliver useful innovations in safety, comfort and everyday practicality.

Features that are available as standard or as options, according to model grade, include a power-operated panoramic roof, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated seats and up to five USB ports around the cabin for the connection or charging of multiple devices.

The new RAV4 offers generous equipment specifications across its range in Europe, with all models equipped as standard with the latest iteration of Toyota Safety Sense and an E call emergency contact function.

Second generation Toyota Safety Sense

Toyota first introduced the Toyota Safety Sense in 2015. To date, more than 10 million new vehicles have benefited from the Toyota Safety Sense. The system helps provide the driver means of avoiding collisions or mitigating the effects of an accident by warning the driver, preparing safety systems for optimum operation and, if necessary, triggering automatic braking or steering assistance.

Toyota have continued to build upon the system and move towards their goal of 0 road accident fatalities and injuries. The second generation of the Toyota Safety Sense is making its debut in all models of the new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

It features a single lense camera and millimetre wave radar. These will both expand the scope of hazard detection and functionality. Furthermore the unit has been made smaller, giving the driver a wider field of vision.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection

Second generation Toyota Safety Sense includes upgraded versions of the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Road Sign Assist and Automatic High Beam. It also introduces Lane Tracing Assist, which provides more advanced driving support.

The Pre-Collision System as been improved to allow the vehicles to detect pedestrians in low light driving as well as daylight. The system has also added the capability to detect and recognise bicycles in the vehicles path, at various speeds between 6 and 50mph in daylight.

In terms of vehicles the system can determine collision risks at speeds between 0 and 112mph. The vehicle will calculate if a collision is imminent the driver will be alerated and prepare the brakes (Pre-Collision Brake Assist). While if the driver doesn’t act on the warnings, the Autonomous Emergency Braking will trigger. This will reduce the vehicle speed by up to 25mph. Which could potentially stop the car and avoid an impact.

Adaptive Cruise Control System

An all new intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control System can work in conjunction with the Toyota RAV4’s Road Sign Assist System. When the car is travelling at a constant, pre-set speed, iACC can recognise new speed limits on major roads and let the driver adjust the speed to keep within the limit, simply by using switches on the steering wheel. While the system itself has been improved to recognise a wider range of road signs. Presenting the information on the drivers multi-informational display.

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has a new Lane Tracing Assist function, this provides the driver with a degree of automated driving support. The system will monitor line markings on motorways and principal routes and apply steering assist to keep the car within it’s lane (when traveling at speeds above 31mph). Allowing to reduce the collision risk and burden on the driver when making long motorway journeys.

Both the Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Tracing Assist systems work together in slow stopgo traffic to help track the vehicle ahead within the traffic lane. Helping to maintain a safe distance and at speed. While bringing the vehicle to a halt when necessary. Furthermore moving off seamlessly when traffic resumes. Helping to relieve the driver of stress when driving in slow moving traffic. Helping to reduce the risk of low speed rear end collisions.

The Lane Departure Alert and Steering assist has been vastly improved to recognise road margins on straight roads when there is no lane markings. If it is difficult for the system to detect lane’s, for example in heavy traffic, the system will track the path of the vehicle ahead using the camera and radar. In combination with the LTA, it will provide corrective steering operation when lane departure without the driver’s intention is detected.

Dynamic grade

The Dynamic grade stands out with its bi-tone paint finish, striking a contrast between the bodywork colour (a choice of four) and a gloss black roof, plus projector LED headlights and black 18-inch alloys. In the cabin, sports-style seats, a black headlining and blue trim accents further emphasise the car’s distinctive quality. Options and accessories are available so owners can equip their RAV4 to perfectly meet their lifestyle preferences.

Panoramic View Monitor plus JBL audio system, panoramic roof

There are a range of premium features available on the all new RAV4. Such as a Panoramic View Monitor. This will provide drivers with a real-time 360-degree view of the area immediately around the vehicle. As well as a bird’s eye view from above.

This can be of use to drivers when they are off road. As you are able to better negotiate tricky terrain, help manoeuvring in confined spaces, helping to see hazards outside of driver’s line of sight.

The RAV4 can also come with a JBL premium audio system. While, it has been tailor made for the new RAV4. It provides you with concert sound quality in it’s 9 speaker architecture. The system features JBL’s signature horn tweeters, a powerful new subwoofer and an amplifier with Clari- FiTM music restoration technology.

YOSHIKAZU SAEKI – CHIEF ENGINEER Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

Yoshikazu Saeki joined Toyota in 1987, he has taken many key important roles in the development of the Toyota Avalon, Camry and the Lexus brand.

As recently he has been involved in Toyota’s expansion globally. While, bringing his talents and experience to develop new technologies, platforms and models.

Saeki said of the new RAV4:

“The RAV4 has held a strong market presence since its introduction 25 years ago. It has gained a loyal following the world over, continually evolving to respond to changing customer needs. For the new RAV4, we set out to create a product that appeals to the next generation of customers.

“The first thing we considered was how we could redefine RAV4’s product value. We addressed the fundamental reason for its being and thought about how we could create an SUV that can withstand the test of time – one that can last for the next 25 years.

“It is never easy to create a new concept in such a strictly segmented and increasingly competitive market. We needed to deliver a ‘wow’ factor to customers, inspire them with a vehicle that has exceptional presence and highlight the benefits of owning it. These were the foundations on which we developed the fifth generation RAV4.

“Since the first generation model, there have been two over-arching views of the RAV4 – ‘driving performance suited to any road’ and a ‘user-friendly interior suited to any situation’. It was my mission to evolve these views.

“This means the RAV4 should have a strong presence and reliable toughness on any road while offering a stress-free driving experience for driver and passengers.

Cont…

“At the very beginning of the design process we thought about how best to evolve the original concept. This led us to the new concept of Adventure and Refinement. Adventure sends out a simple, strong message that drivers can drive anywhere they want, expressing waku-doki – the equivalent of ‘heart-pumping excitement’ in Japanese. Refinement is expressed in a sophisticated design that fits in with an urban setting.

“Combining these contrasting elements enhances the new RAV4’s unique value. Furthermore, its wide stance, large tyres and raised ground clearance create a strong image which are further emphasised by the polygon design theme and the vehicle’s multipurpose capabilities. Just looking at the new RAV4 triggers the urge to get in and go somewhere.

“Where vehicle performance, handling and stability are concerned, we defined the key concept as ‘Confident and Natural’ – with the driver’s sensibilities at the heart of everything. As a team we put great effort into improving the driving experience by focusing on enhancing tyre-to-ground contact, stable and natural cornering and smooth, responsive driving.

“We’ve improved the RAV4’s performance to meet the demands of any road. Whereas a conventional SUV suspension makes for an uncomfortable, unresponsive ride in off-road conditions, the RAV4 provides saloon-like comfort and an enjoyable ride.”

Range Rover PHEV

We’ve recently been on a fantastic road trip, in a beast of a car, the Range Rover Phev! This was all thanks to an app called THE OUT!

Firstly we want to make a note of how BEAUTIFUL this car is. PHEV vehicles enjoy the same levels of quality and refinement as other Range Rovers. The materials and finish are premium and at an exemplar level. Not only that it also comes with lots of TECH! Just what we love! Such as the Touch Pro Duo and the Interactive Driver Display. Touch Pro Duo is Range Rovers latest entertainment/information technology. They’re calling it infotainment system. It seamlessly integrates two 10” high-definition Touchscreens, allowing you to simultaneously interact with multiple features easily! The Interactive Driver Display is an optional 12.3″ HD display which will show a vast amount of driving information and active safety data. Allowing you to see a full map and control other media. Ever get into a car on a hot day and got burned?! Well to prevent overheating there’s an auto sunblind which will close automatically when passengers have disembarked and the doors locked.

Charging

To charge the Range Rover PHEV, it takes 7.5 hours to recharge using your home charging cable. However this is dependent on your local power supply. Furthermore by using Timed Charging you can specify when the PHEV charges. Allowing you to take advantage of off peak electricity tariffs. While by using this you could simply choose the best time of day to charge for you! The PHEV has been designed fantastically, for example the charging port is in the front grille! So not only does it provide an easy connection, it’s hidden from sight and doesn’t affect how the PHEV looks!

Intelligent Plug-In Hybrid Display

Integrated within Touch Pro Duo and the Interactive Driver Display, we are absolutely amazed by this feature. As it will tell you just how good you’re driving, including how efficient you are! So all that money spent on filling up may be down to you! The display will give you real time data about hwo the electric motor is working alongside the petrol engine.

Cabin Preconditioning

This feature would be fantastic on those cold winter mornings! You can pre-heat or pre-cool the inside of the car before you get in via the app. All this without turning on the vehicles engine! Furthermore you still maintain full electric range!

Intelligent Routing

PHEV owners will be able to see where the charging points are as they’ll be highlighted on a given route. This works alongside the InControl feature. It will also detail the most efficient route for both gradient and terrain, shown on the upper Touchscreen.

Plug In Hybrid Fuel Economy

When you are using EV mode, the engine will give a mileage limit of 25-24miles. On Longer journeys both motors (electric/petrol) will work alongside to produce an incredible 72g/km CO2 emissions! Therefore saving on fuel costs and a cleaner environment!

Quiet

The Range Rover PHEV is the quietest Range Rover! Furthermore it has a seamless transition between petrol and electric, creating a sense of serenity within the interior space.

Exceptional Capabilities

As with all Range Rovers, the Range Rover PHEV is no different. It can handle even the most treacherous of terrains with ease. It will give the most composed and capable drive across any terrain. EV mode allows for exceptional control at low speeds. Plus maintaining Ranger Rovers best in class wading capacity of up to 900mm!

Ride

The off roading is super easy with the AWD capabilities. You can attack the demands of the terrain as standard. However with the Optional Terrain Response 2 you can do so much more! The PHEV will automatically adapt to the response of the engine, gearbox, differentials and chassis system, to the driving conditions. Furthermore there’s a total of 7 different driving modes. Such as Dynamic, Eco, Comfort, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud and Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl. One aspect of what makes the PHEV have a smooth ride is the Speed Lowering System. This will use the electronic air suspension to reduce the aerodynamic drag at cruising speeds. How? Well the system will lower the vehicle ride height by 15mm from normal ride height. However, this will only happen once 65mph has been reached. Furthermore as part of the Terrain Response, the car will calibrate the suspension settings to provide a more refined drive. For example it will deliver a firmer suspension setting to accomodate a more dynamic driving style.

Help

Advanced Tow Assist will help those with trailers! It will allow you to control the direction of your trailer when reversing. The optional system, the rotary Terrain Response 2 controller, will control your  vehicles steering to achieve the desired trailer trajectory. While, Land Rover’s patented Hill Descent Control (HDC) is a standard feature. This features helps drivers with controlled descents of difficult slopes. It does this by maintaining a constant speed and applying the brake separately to each of the wheels.

Lights

The Range Rover PHEV has some incredible all round exterior LED lighting. This is as standard too! They’re pixel laser LED headlights provide 5 times the higher luminance than standard LED lights too! They become operational above 60mph when no other external lights are detected. They’ll produce clear sight for up to 55o meters!

Range Rover PHEV Safety

If a potential collision is detected drivers will get given a warning. This allows you to take action. However, if there is no action, the system will brake for you. A Lane Detection Warning system can warn you when you are unintentionally drifting out of lane. It will too notify you with a visual alert, but also give you a steering wheel vibration. Furthermore when you reverse, the senses in the rear bumper are triggered. The Touchscreen and audio feedback will indicate how close you are to obstacles. The cruise control with speed limiter will also help drivers maintain speed without continued use of the accelerator. Therefore helping to prevent fatigue!

There are also some optional added safety features:

The Drive Pack will give you Driver Condition Monitor, Blind Spot Monitor, Traffic Sign Recognition and Adaptive Speed Limiter!

Drive Pro Pack features all of the above plus Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control and High-Speed Emergency Braking.

While the Park Pack has a 360° Parking Aid and Rear Traffic Monitor. Clear Exit Monitor which will alert backseat passengers to any approaching cars, cyclists or other hazards.

Also the Park Pro features the Park Pack contents and Park Assist to make parallel and perpendicular parking easier than ever by steering your vehicle into a suitable space.

Yet, if you want it all! The Driver Assist Pack contains the most comprehensive suite of drive and park technologies. Building on both the Drive Pro and Park Pro Packs, the Driver Assist Pack offers additional Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist and 360° Surround Camera.

Range Rover PHEV Technologies

Every Range Rover PHEV has a 500mb SIM card equipped. On the Essential data plan you’ll have to pay no extra. You’ll get 500mb of data per month for free for 3 years! Therefore you’ll be able to get live traffic updates and a lot more such as in-car streaming!

Enjoy all that with massage seating!  Enjoy a Hot-Stone massage whilst in the comfort of your seat! Select 25 different massage programmes which include rolling and pulse modes. This is part of optional Comfort and Comfort-Plus seating packs. Which can also come with optional rear Executive Class seats! They’ll be wider and provide deeper cushioning!

Furthermore it could also lessen the consequence if the vehicle is involved in an impact. Not only that there’s a Pre-Collision System has been increased with pedestrian detection and bicyclists. Also, the the new RX is available with a BladeScanTM Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), which uses a rapidly rotating blade-shaped mirror to direct light from the LED. This allows finer and deeper automatic forward illumination. Therefore providing better vision, making it easier to see pedestrians on road margins. Not only that it doesn’t cause dazzling for other drivers.

Inside the vehicle to RX’s seats support and give comfort with ergonomic design and quality. They’re also low set allowing for excellent headroom. The position of the steering wheel closer to the drive, plus at a lower angle create a much more enjoyable driving position.

RX F SPORT

There are quite a few special and visual performances that help separate the Sport from the other models.

Such as a jet black finish to the F Sport exclusive spindle grille mesh. A new black frame, an aluminum-look lower bumper edged in black and underguard. The RX F Sport also has beastly 20-inch F sport wheels with a multi-spoke design.

Inside the vehicle the style compliments the F Sports character. Such as highly supportive seats with quilted upholstery. New F brushed aluminum trim inserts. Also the choice of Black, Black with white accents and Flare Red with Black Accents for choices of colours. The shift lever and three spoke steering wheel is also exclusive to the F Sport. They’re all covered in a tactile perforated leather. Furthermore the pedals are also drilled and non slip aluminum!

The instrument cluster is also different to the other models. The 8 inch display is dominated by a larger circular gauge, which combines the functions of a tachometer and speedometer.

Power

The RX 450h is a self charging hybrid system, with a 3.5l direct injection V6 petrol engine. It has a maximum output of 259bhp/193kW/262 DIN hp at 6,000rpm with 335Nm of torque at 4,600rpm. The total system output (engine and electric motor combined) amounts to 308bhp/230kW/313 DIN hp. The fuel consumption is from 35.3 to 35.7mpg.

The powertrain has been improved, the key components and control systems in the Lexus Hybrid Drive System to deliver better fuel economy and minimal emissions. The front transaxle gained a new water cooled transmission oil cooler for the electric motor. Plus a pre-loaded differential to improve performance and straight line stability.

Furthermore other updates to the system include a Power Control Unit and HV Engine Control Unit. This allows for better energy efficiency, more driver friendly operation and more refined performance. Plus the RX 450h has a E-Four All Wheel Drive System!

E-Four all-wheel drive

The RX 450h uses Lexus’s proactive E-Four system. What this is, is a system which locates an additional motor/generator on the rear axle. This leads to fuel and energy use to be reduced. Why? Well the AWD operation is limited to only when necessary. Which allows the rear-mounted motor to act as a generator to charge the battery when the vehicle’s regenerative braking system is operating.

Friction Control Device

A new friction control device has been introduced in the RX. THey’ve been placed at the front and rear shock absorbers. This helps to provide a better ride on roads with slightly uneven surfaces. Furthermore it helps to improve steering responsiveness.

Drive Mode Select

The RX’s Drive Mode Select system allows the driver to choose from a variety of different settings to suit their preferences:

  • The standard system provides Normal, Eco and Sport modes, while versions of the RX fitted with Adaptive Variable suspension additionally feature Sport S, Sport S+ and – an established Lexus first – Customise modes.
  • Eco mode moderates throttle response and engine power output and adjusts climate control operation to support fuel economy.
  • Normal mode provides an even balance between engine performance and fuel economy. Together with Eco mode, it provides a suspension setting that prioritises comfort.
  • Sport mode ramps up performance with sharper throttle response and acceleration and adds weight to the steering.
  • Sport S sets an even higher performance level, with revised throttle mapping and quicker powertrain response. In the RX 450h, the hybrid system allows for enhanced accelerator response and a feeling of more powerful acceleration.
  • Sport S+ combines the powertrain enhancements of Sport S mode, while sharpening the feel of the electric power steering and initiating stiffer suspension for flatter cornering.
  • The Customise mode lets the driver combine their preferred settings for the engine/hybrid system, chassis and air conditioning to suit their preference. This can be accomplished in an easy-to-follow process using the RX’s central display screen.
  • The driver can also make use of an EV mode which switches the vehicle to all-electric operation, shutting down the petrol engine until the limit of battery charge or speed is reached.

ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES

Lexus Safety System+

The new 2020 Lexus RX comes equipped with an upgraded version of the Lexus Safety System+. Which include a whole host of features such as:

The Pre-Collision System (PCS) this uses a front mounted camera and a millimeter wave radar. This detects vehicles and pedestrians on the road ahead. If there is a risk of collision, the car automatically warns the driver and provides extra braking force the moment the brake pedal is pushed. However if the driver does not react and the car thinks a collision is imminent, the brakes will be applied automatically to reduce speed. While the seatbelts are tensioned to brace passengers for potential impact. This system has also been updated to be capable of better detecting pedestrians in both day and night time situations.

The same radar used in the PCS also will provide Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. This helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. While once the way head is clear the car will accelerate to it’s cruising speed. The system is also intelligent enough to provide low-speed following. Making driving more enjoyable in stop start situations.

Assists

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) will detect when you deviate from your lane. Without the indicators being used. It will provide a warning and steering inputs to help keep the vehicle centered. As it can detect the markings on the road surface.

The RX also has this amazing system where it can assist reading road signs. The Road Sign Assist system uses a camera to recognise principle warning and command signs. Therefore reducing the risk of the driver not being aware of road speed limits.

Lexus Safety System+ further includes Automatic High Beam (AHB), which detects oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead and automatically switches the headlights between high and low beam.

Sway Warning

The cameras used in the RX’s Lane Tracing Assist will also provide a Sway Warning function. The car will monitor it’s lane position and the drivers steering inputs. The vehicle can detect the vehicle swaying caused by drowsiness or even distraction. If it thinks so, it will alert and display a warning on the display. Suggestion that the driver takes a break.

Panoramic View Monitor

Sometimes it’s difficult to park in tight spaces. Or drive over rough and uneven surfaces. Well this got a whole lot easier and safer with the 360 degree Panoramic View Monitor. While not standard on the F Sport. You can add it to the vehicle with the Takumi Pack option.

The system uses an array of cameras to give a driver an all round view of the vehicles location. Not only that you get a bird’s eye view for a better look at your surroundings. The Panoramic View Monitor also allows for better look at obstacles and hazards, eliminating any blind spots. For example the car can help the driver steer into a parallel parking spot, adding guidelines to the real-time camera images to help the driver steer precisely.  Furthermore front and rear sensors will sound an alert when the vehicle moves closer to an obstacle.

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert

The RX has a Blind Spot Monitor uses rear mounted radars to detect vehicles in adjacent lanes. Plus it can also detect objects behind the RX when reversing. Also the Rear Cross Traffic Alert will warn drivers of traffic or people approaching from either side when reversing out or into a parking space. These functions are standard on the RX Takumi and available in the Tech and Safety and Takumi Pack options.

Parking Support Brake

The RX makes it easier and safer to park and complete low speed manoeuvres, with the Parking Support Brake. If the RC detects a risk of the vehicle making contact with something, infront or behind, it will automatically provide drive and brake control to help avoid a collision and reduce damage risks.

The Parking Support Brake system also includes the functions of the Intelligent Clearance Sonar and Rear Corss Traffic Auto Brake. To enhance visibility and make operation easier!

MULTIMEDIA AND AUDIO SYSTEMS

The RX has a 12.3inch touchpad, which allows users to swipe, pinch and flick, like we are all used to on our smartphones. The screen has been moved forward so it is easier to reach for both the driver and the passenger.

Two USB ports have been moved to the front of the center console and two others have been located at the rear of the unit.

While the standard Lexus multimedia system features an eight-inch TFT display on the centre console. This is operated by the Remote Touch Interface.

This can be set to display a single panel for example a map. Two panels for example half a map and half information or three panel, such as half a map and two information screens. The information that can be shown can be navigation, fuel consumption and audio details.

LexusLink

LexusLink gives the new RX excellent connectivity, accessed via an app. It allows access to useful functions, including: –

  • Find my Car, including the option to share locations with friends
  • Share to Car, to send navigation destinations to the car
  • Last mile guidance
  • Driving Analytics, including speed, distance travelled, time in vehicle, idle time, top speed, severity of braking and acceleration and percentage of time spent in motorway driving
  • Online service bookings and reminders
  • Active Safety Plan to automatically notify a chosen contact via SMS in the event of an accident

The new RX comes with a WiFi hotspot. As standard too! When you purchase an RX you get a complimentary three- month/24GB data plan!

Pioneer 12-speaker audio

Inside the RX is Pioneer’s 12-speaker system which comes as standard on the RX and F Sport. It also comes with a single DVD player and has Coherent Source Transducer (CST) technology which gives high quality and extremely realistic sound reproduction. It includes 200mm subs and 180mm woofers in the front doors.

Ocean all electric affordable car by Fisker!

Fisker recently revealed that they are planning to release an affordable electric SUV in 2021. This SUV is called “Fisker Ocean”, they’ll build a show car and debut a “fully running production intent prototype sitting on the actual, completely engineered platform” on the 4th January 2020.  When they reveal the “Fisker Ocean” it will be during a private event. However, it will be livestreamed so everyone can watch.

Recycling

What separates the Fisker Ocean from many other electric vehicles is that it will have a full length solar roof. Therefore extending the vehicles range. Fisker believes that the solar panel will provide up to an extra 1,000 miles worth of energy and clean miles a year. To further highlight Fisker’s belief in recycling, the carpeting will be made of fishing net which have been pulled from oceans. While vegan materials will be used for the interior.

Fisker are releasing it’s own mobile app on November 27th to lease the vehicle with no long term contracts. They will take early reservations and tell us more information about “Ocean” on the same day.

Fisker have previously said that the SUV will cost >$40,000, therefore making it one of the relatively affordable EV’s on the market. The target range for the SUV will approximately be 250 to 300miles. While it may come with an 80kWh lithium-ion battery.

While, Fisker’s Ocean sub-$40,000 electric car will debut on January 4th, 2020, production is stated to begin by the end of 2021. With the first set of high volume deliveries to take place in 2022.

Need A New Car? These Top Tips Should Help You Decide

There comes a time in life when you have to put down your electric scooter and upgrade to something a bit more substantial to get you from A to B. Getting a new car is one of the most rewarding ventures, and choosing one that fits your own specific needs couldn’t be simpler. Following a few basic guidelines can help you sort through the thousands upon thousands that are on offer today, and help you to make the most of any test drives you plan for cars that you’re potentially interested in. So, if you need to buy a new or even your first car, then read on for some of the best top tips to aid you in making the right choice!

Set Your Budget

Before you even start looking for a car, you have to set your budget. Looking at vehicles that are completely out of your price range will only leave you disappointed when you feel as though you are ‘settling’ for a cheaper make and model. Secure an amount that you can definitely stick to, and begin searching for cars that are less than this number. Don’t be afraid to search for second hand vehicles, as despite them having a previous owner, they can still provide you with all of the usual services at a fraction of the price. For example, a brows though a used Audi Q range can offer you some really great prices for SUVs which although they have been used previously, they have been looked after very well with low mileages, valeted to a high standard – what’s not to love?

Petrol Or Electric?

With such an increase in investment in the electric car industry, the following question is becoming more and more common: do you really want or need a petrol powered vehicle? Though there is such a wealth of different makes and models that run on petrol, or even diesel, buying an electric car might just be a smart investment. They offer all of the usual services and features of their gas counterparts, but are much more environmentally friendly, and are said to be much cheaper to run and maintain. The main issue with electric cars is finding a charging point when you are out and about, as they are much less common than petrol stations, which could leave you in need of a tow on more than one occasion.

Always Do A Test Drive

One of the most important things you must always do before purchasing any car is perform a test drive in the vehicle. That very reasonable price tag might be down to an issue that’s not listed in the advert, and this could leave you out of pocket with a car that doesn’t work. Even if you just go for a short spin around the block, you will get the chance to listen to the car, and test the steering and motor for any obvious faults.

So, what are you waiting for? for? Get out there and find your next car today!

Solar Panel Road!

What Marcus has been saving for WEEKS has actually come true. (Who knew he’d be such a tastemaker for great tech!)

France has just launched it’s first solar panel road. French Ecology Minister Ségolène Royal launched the road December last year in an attempt to increase the ways in which the country uses renewable energy and reduce it’s greenhouse gas emissions. The road took 5 years to develop and cost $5.2Million dollars. The road includes 30,000 square footage of solar panels which are coated with a clear silicon resin which is able to resist the impact of constant flow of traffic.

They won’t be rolled out across the country just yet as they are still incredibly expensive to manufacture in large quantities. France however have stated that if costs can be kept low and the efficiency of the panels up then they could install them across another 1,000 kilometers of its roads and then who knows what the future holds for their roads and beyond.

Electric Car Charing Ports for all!

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular the past several years especially with the introduction of the Tesla. Now there are several huge car firms that are prepping for the future of car travel and are creating high powered charging networks across Europe. 400 Charging Sites to be exact.

The firms are BMW, Daimler, Ford and Volkswagen Group, including Audi and Porsche.

The charging stations (sounds like a massive dock for your car!) provides really quick charging for your electronic cars, along many major roads across Europe. (However we think 400 is a little small for such a large area of land) Tesla’s can’t use these charge points as their cars use different electronic systems, so if you have a Tesla, you’re out of luck. Sorry!

Reason being as the network will use combined charging system standard technology, while Drivers of electric cars can plug in and charge at speeds of 350kw which is a lot lot faster than you can get today!
