Crazy China Facial Recognition
/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywrightThis is some CRAZY next level facial recognition technology coming right out of China. Once you hear about the lengths and levels of the facial recognition that China has at their ability you will be amazed!
The Chinese police have used facial recognition technology to arrest someone – get this – in a crowd of 60,000 concert goers.
CRAZY!
The suspect is only known as a Mr Ao, he was attending a concert of popular pop star Jacky Cheung in Nanchang city. Then he was caught. Whilst it is unaware as to what he was wanted for, the BBC are reporting that he was wanted for “economic crimes” Whilst this may come as a suprise after being recognised in such a large number of people in such as small space, China has a HUGE surveillance network. There are over 170million CCTV cameras in China.
He was identified apon arrival and was apprehended once he had sat down. So, he didn’t even get to see the concert! Police Officer Li Jin told state news agency Xinhua that the suspect was taken completely by surprise. As he didn’t know he’d be spotted in such a large crowd so quickly. Mr Li also spoke to China Daily and informed them that there are several cameras that are equipped with facial technology at ticket entrances.
Mr Ao had intended to go see the concert with his wife after travelling 56miles especially to see it. According to news site Kan Kan, who allegedly have footage from within custody. Mr Ao is reported to have said that he wouldn’t have gone to the concert if he knew there was facial recognition tech there!
The BBC are reporting that this isn’t the only case of the Chinese police using facial technology to catch suspects. In Aug of 2017, police in Shandong province arrested 25 suspects using the tech which was set up at a Beer festival.
China has said to be building the largest surveillance network. With plans to build 400million new cameras, which are to expected to be installed within 3 years. Many of which have artificial and facial recongition technology. So it’s no suprise that China regularly remind citizens that it’s almost impossible to evade authorities.

Madison Square Garden has your face!
/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywrightSo, Madison Square Garden has your face, well if you attended a show there recently. As a security measure, Madison Square Garden’s security team has been compiling images of your face for quite sometime now. It’s been using facial recognition as a form of security as a way of keeping everyone safe. Using cameras to capture images of it’s users. Then running those images through an algorithm to compare them against a database of images. One would assume that database would be a database of criminals. Or logs of problematic attendees to other venues.
This would be ok, however, no one knows when this was implemented in Madison Square Garden. Nor is it possible to be made aware of which events that the facial recognition has been used for. All of them? Some of them? All the Garden, Madison Square Garden’s mamagement team told New York Times:
“MSG continues to test and explore the use of new technologies to ensure we’re employing the most effective security procedures to provide a sage and wonderful experience for our guests”
Madison Square Garden: How could this tech be used?
Consequently, MSG could use the technology internally to determin who’s allowed in certain areas of the venue. As we enquired above and NYT mentioned in their article. Facial recognition software for public venues are pointless without law enforcement watch lists. Therefore, what’s the point of having them without it? Who know’s what else that this tech could be used for. Would our faces be sold for marketing purposes? Also, who else is going to have my face?
However, the ultimate question is though, would you feel safer knowing that this tech, could prevent unsavoury characters from entering the building. If someone could have a picture of your face?

Police facial recognition in China!?
/in Gadgets / Tech/by billywrightChina are using police facial recognition tech to find criminals on the run and those using fake ID’s!
While using this technology there has been some success with the tech leading to 7 arrests. All of whom were related to major criminal cases. Furthermore they’ve caught 26 people using fake ID’s, according to People’s Daily
Wall Street Journal are reporting that this tech is from a Beijing based company called LLVision. They produce (unsurprisingly) wearable video cameras to sell to the everyday man. Super cool ones like the police use? You’re going to have to be vetted. Still, if you’re a regular joe, you’re still not getting them.
Police facial recognition: Impressive
LLVision revealed in tests that their system was incredibly good! It was able to pick out people from a database of 10,000 people in 100milliseconds. (This is some Minority Report type ish!) While this is very impressive, the CEO, Wu Fei, informed the Wall Street Journal that it would probably drop. The reason behind it’s impressive speed is due to the fact that all the information is stored locally. Via a handheld device rather than the cloud. Thus saving huge amounts of time.
With all this tech, yet impressive, it comes with some huge privacy concerns. William Nee of Amnesty International told the WSJ:
“The potential to give individual police officers facial recognition technology in sunglasses could eventually make China’s surveillance state all the more ubiquitous.”
Engadget reported recently that China was using facial recognition technology to geo-fence residents of the Xinjiang region. A muslim dominated area. Allegedly China are looking at using facial recognition to build a database of every single one of its 1.3 billion citizens!
