Episode 323 Steffan Powell / The Rizen Producers

brightburn

Brightburn: Superhero Horror

This brand new movie from James Gunn is very very intriguing to us. Why? Well it takes one of our most favoured film genre’s and turns it on it’s head and mashes it with another. The Superhero movie meets horror movie. Consider us intrigued! This is Brightburn, arriving in cinemas summer 2019!

Brightburn tells the story of a child from another world, crash landing on Earth. However, instead of the same old story of him becoming a world saviour. What if he became something more sinister and caused havoc anywhere he went. Brightburn is brought to you by the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of The Galaxy and Slither, so you know it’s going to be good! It’s a new take on an already established genre.

Will this new approach to horror and superhero movies pave the way for other movies to take this route? Will we see new franchises brought from this? Who knows! What we do know is that this movie is a crazy take on the genre and definitely turns things on it’s head. It’s this type originality that we love here at How To Kill An Hour and we wonder what will come of it!

The Pendulum

The Pendulum: Incredibly scary hyper reality

This week Marcus has delved into the world of VR once more and this time we’re not sure if he came out of it the same man as he was when he went in. It’s called ‘The Pendulum’ from the guys over at the Vault festival.

The story of ‘The Pendulum’ is as follows. You take on a character that has a secret that can bring down something called the ‘Foundation’. They have a device called The Pendulum which will reveal all of your darkest fears and use them against you.

Can you resist and survive The Pit in which you are placed?

‘The Pendulum’ is described as a hyper-reality experience, it’s one of the first that’s here in the UK. (We’ve tried another one with the Star Wars franchise) The Pendulum blends VR and physical sensations to immerse users in to a world that’s almost like our own. Consequently creating an unnerving interactive horror for one person.

The Pendulum Story

The story is loosely based on an original Edgar Allen Poe story, yet, it takes a lot of it’s inspiration by eighties visceral and psychological horror movies. Kronenberg and Hellraiser are some of the most famous examples that you may be aware of.

The site that The Pendulum is on also immerses you before the story even begins, with creepy environments (we won’t say exactly what, don’t want to give away the secrecy) The story has different endings depending on how you fare once inside, however, you got to make it to the end first.

However, one thing to note that, this game is scary, it’s designed to scare you. We will say that, if you do get too frightened and want the experience to stop, there is a safeword. So take on ‘The Pendulum’ at your own peril!

So, what do you think of the sound of the Pendulum? Have you experienced The Pendulum already? Let us know your thoughts by connecting with us on our social platforms, we’re @howtokillanhour across all of them!

Hello Neighbor

Hello Neighbor: A stealth Horror

Hello Neighbor

Thanks to the guys over at Tiny Build we were able to check out Hello Neighbor (Steam)!

What is ‘Hello Neighbor’ I hear you ask? Well it’s not a game that requires you to knock on all of your neighbors homes and introduce yourself. Nor is it a knock down ginger game.

It’s a game all about mystery. A mystery of your creepy neighbor.

You play as a young boy, playing with his ball in the street, when all of a sudden he hears a strange noise coming from his creepy neighbors home. It turns out that he’s hiding something in his basement. This intrigues you and you want to find out exactly what he’s hiding in there!

This is where you, the player, come in. It’s down to you to use your wit and problem solving abilities to maneuver yourself to discovering what is unknown.

Hello Neighbor: AI Intelligence

However, you always have to come up with new ways to get into the house and away from the creepy neighbor. The neighbor may be creepy but he is highly intelligent! If you get caught trying a potential solution one way, you’re unlikely to be able to do the same again! He remembers where you went and how you did it, so may lay down traps for you!

This adds an element of replayability as it makes you think about what you’re going to next. Therefore making the game not as linear as others as our game may not be the same as yours! He will learn and he will adapt, so it’s down to you to be one step ahead of the creepy neighbor each and every time!
